I was all set to talk about Tiger Woods and Y.E. Yang, Michael Vick, or the Panthers first Preseason Game, but a certain 39-year old from Hattiesburg, Mississippi decided he wanted back in the spotlight, and that is where he is today. This saga has more twist and turns than a season of Desperate Housewives or As the World Turns. There are so many unanswered questions around this entire drama that I am unsure we will ever get honest answers from him. At his introductory press conference, Favre discussed how he thought the Vikings were the perfect fit for him. The cynic in me wonders for how long? Favre claims this return has nothing to do with getting to play the Packers twice a year, but how can it not? He claims both sides were wrong in how things went down with his departure from Green Bay, and that he paid attention to how the Packers performed last season. He says he is doing this for all the right reasons, but my question is,” What are the right reasons?” Are the right reasons right for Brett, The Vikings, both, none, who?
For Brett, the reasons seem pretty simple. It is the same offense he ran in Green Bay for all those seasons, so the terminology and plays should be pretty simple for him. Coach Childress discussed how during the phone call to Favre this past weekend, Favre was asking him about receivers running certain routes on certain plays. Favre knows the system, now just needs to learn the receivers and their routes.
The Vikings sold 2,000 season tickets on Tuesday and 6,000 individual tickets after the announcement of Favre’s signing. This is not only a financial windfall for the team, but should assist in the team’s performance on the field. The addition of Favre to the Viking’s offense should help out Adrian Peterson in seeing less 8-man boxes. Defenses will have to respect Favre’s arm, until he show otherwise. Bernard Berrian should also be poised to have a better season with a quarterback in Favre that is reliable. Coach Childress obviously did not see some things he wanted out of Sage Rosenfels or Tavaris Jackson last week in game one, prompting him to make the call to Favre.
Brett Favre signed a two year deal worth $ 25 Million to play for the Vikings. Brad Childress is in the final year of his contract with the Vikings. Both are putting all of their chips on the table in this move. I like watching Favre play; I just hope he is able to play at a level that is acceptable to Favre and his fans. The last thing anyone wants to see is Favre playing at a level that tarnishes his reputation. Remember the Monday night game after Brett’s father passed away, that is the Brett Favre I want to remember. The playmaker, the guy you never count out in a late-game situation, that is the Favre everyone wants to see. No one wants to see the guy we saw in a Jets uniform in December. Well, no one except maybe Ted Thompson and Aaron Rodgers.
